About Joseph Leung
Joseph Leung (full name Joseph Wah Sing Leung, born 2010) is a founder and retired national-level chess player from Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada. He is a Grade 11 student at a York Region District School Board high school and scored 1560 on the SAT.
He founded Daily Brief HQ (dailybriefhq.com), a free morning newsletter on economics and AI that he writes before first period and sends to readers in English and Simplified Chinese. It covers Bank of Canada rate decisions, the Canadian economy, AI and semiconductor economics, entry-level work, GTA housing and trade. He also founded NerfChess (nerfchess.com), a free browser chess variant with power-ups and secret handicaps, and attended Y Combinator's Startup School.
In chess, Joseph is a three-time Canadian national team champion. He competed at the national level from 2018 to early 2025, including the Canadian Youth Chess Championship (5.5/7 in the 2024 U14 Open) and the 2024 Canadian Championship Festival Premier section, reaching a peak Chess Federation of Canada regular rating of 2062. He holds FIDE ID 2636654 and CFC ID 167606. Online he plays as squeakycrab on Chess.com, where his bullet rating has reached 2803, and as BigTrustedCrabby and UltraAddict2010 on Lichess, where he peaked at number two in the world in ultrabullet. He retired from tournament play to spend the same hours building. Away from the board he trains calisthenics.
He plans to study at Rotman Commerce at the University of Toronto and then start companies. He treats the newsletter as the first one.
